Description
SWTRA is responsible for managing, maintaining and improving approximately 436 km of trunk road and 178 km of motorway and its associated assets on behalf of the Welsh Government.

Core Highways have been successfully providing a “one stop shop” for all traffic management services & solutions to all of the Principal Contractors from the inception of SWTRA to the present day.

These services include traffic management design, installation, maintenance and removal as well as vehicle monitoring & recovery services, temporary vehicle barrier systems and road markings.

To date we have successfully completed over a thousand individual schemes, incorporating works such as:

  • M4 Kenfig Viaduct Refurbishment (Phases 1&2) – incorporating design and installation of contraflow system, vehicle monitoring & recovery services
  • M4 Junction 33 West Bound Dedicated Lane to the A4232 – including design and installation of narrow lanes
  • A40 “The Kell” – construction & improvements to over a kilometre of single carriageway
  • M4 J32 Coryton Roundabout – providing a dedicated route from the M4 westbound to the northbound A470, and construction of a new signalised junction on the A470 to allow for the motorway traffic to join the A470 and to negate the need to travel around the Coryton roundabout
Approach
Our success has been built on excellent customer service and an innovative and collaborative approach to working with clients and stakeholders.

One of the challenges we face is to provide a best value traffic management solution to all maintenance and improvement schemes undertaken on the network.

To achieve this, we promote collaboration and engagement with key stakeholders
(including consultancies, local authorities, contractors, police, local businesses etc) at the earliest possible opportunity.

This enables us to utilise our significant experience at design stage and provide advice with regard to alternative traffic management methodology and layouts.

This approach often realises significant time and cost savings to achieve best value, whilst ensuring the highest possible levels of safety to protect the workforce and road users alike.

We also offer support during implementation and delivery of schemes, attending meetings with key stakeholders to provide on-going assurance and continuous improvement with regard to our traffic management services.

Through our involvement with industry associations such as RoWSaF, National Highways and the TMCA, we take a proactive approach to driving best practice and implementing change.
