As part of Skanska's Work Experience Week on the A47/A11 Thickthorn Junction Improvement Scheme, Core Highways was proud to support the development of 13 Key Stage 4 students by delivering an engaging introduction to the world of Traffic Management.

 

The interactive session was led by Chris Buckmaster, Project Manager, and was closely supported by Nigel Broom, Depot Manager. Together, they provided students with an insight into the vital role that Traffic Management plays in keeping both road users and construction teams safe.

The session covered:

  • Site safety and safe working practices
  • Traffic management signs and their purpose
  • Basic traffic management layouts
  • Temporary traffic signals and light sequencing

 

One of the most impactful parts of the day was hearing from one of our Traffic Management Operatives, who shared their personal journey into the industry. Speaking openly about overcoming a challenging start in life, including a period in prison during their teenage years, they demonstrated how determination, opportunity and support can lead to a successful and rewarding career. Their story resonated with the students and highlighted that careers in Traffic Management are open to people from all backgrounds.

By combining technical learning with real-life experiences, the session aimed to broaden students' understanding of the industry, challenge perceptions, and inspire them to consider future careers in infrastructure and construction.

About the Project

The A47/A11 Thickthorn Junction Improvement Scheme is a major infrastructure project that will transform one of the busiest junctions southwest of Norwich.

The scheme includes:

  • New free-flow links
  • Underpasses and bridges
  • Improved facilities for pedestrians and cyclists

Once complete, the project will reduce congestion, improve road safety and journey reliability, while supporting future housing and employment growth across the region. The project is currently scheduled for completion in March 2028.
