Social Value
Continually improving society is at the core of our business.
When it comes to engineering social value into our culture, we don’t just say it. We do it.
We are committed to supporting our clients in connecting the country. But we do so in ways that deliver long-lasting value well beyond the works and our own direct involvement.
Reaching out beyond our business
We efficiently plan and implement temporary traffic management and associated services on the UK’s roads and highways, to keep the nation moving safely and smoothly.
By seeking new and better ways of answering our customers’ challenges, we drive value and efficiency into every projects. We create social value at every touchpoint, by sustainably advancing our economy, our people and our communities. Together, we work hard to make the world a safer, happier, and better place.
By employing over 1,300 people across England and Wales, we can drive lasting beneficial change not only through our business, but through our industry and wider society.
Our vision
By 2025 we aim to be
- Social Value Quality Mark certified
- Aligned with ISO 20400 Sustainable Procurement Guidance
By 2030 we aim to achieve a
- 35% increase in recruitment and retention of ex-offenders
- 90% volunteering rate across Core Highways
We are committed to delivering on our eight-part plan
Our social value strategy is structured around eight key goals. These are aligned with our internal and external activities, as well as to our own company values.
1. Implement a social value calculator
In 2023, we implemented a social value calculator as a baseline to drive and monitor the social value we create.
Through this, we measure the benefit of our social value activity across the business by contract and customer.
2. Gain accreditation of the 'Social Value Quality Mark'
3. Maintain accreditation as 'Investors in People'
4. Create a Supply Chain Sustainability School level 1 partnership
5. Fully align with ISO 20400 Sustainable Procurement Guidance
6. Attract and retain talent from under-represented groups
7. Focus on employee health and wellbeing
8. Continue creating a culture of social value engagement
Including creating meaningful partnerships with charities and a framework for volunteering at every level of our business.
